Getting started with the IRB process

  • Log in with your NetID and password, and complete the "UW Social and Behavioral Course"
  • When logged into CITI, choose "Add a course"
  • Under Question 2, choose "Human Subjects Protection for Education, Social & Behavioral Science Researchers (if listed only on protocols submitted to the ED IRB or SBS IRB)"

Access WebKit

Send an email to the SBS IRB or the ED IRB with the following information, and request access to WebKit:

  • Name:
  • NetID:
  • UW Email address:
  • Position on campus (Grad student, Academic staff, etc.):
  • Department:
  • Address:
  • Phone:
  • CITI Training date (see above):

Create Protocol Application

Log in to WebKit with your NetID and password. On the left hand bar, choose "New Protocol Application."
Instructions are available within WebKit, and can also be found here.

Review tips for filling out your protocol application, to ensure it moves through the IRB process quickly.

If the research team includes non-UW personnel (meaning persons other than UW faculty, staff, and students), review the Collaborating Investigators document.

Create Consent Document

The IRBs recommend the use of the Consent Form Wizard. This wizard will ask questions and produce a template to be used as the basis for your consent document. Be sure to read the template created by the wizard, and make any necessary edits and changes. Also, be sure that the final document a) matches the information provided in the protocol application, and b) is appropriate for your study. For example, if you are using an oral consent process, be sure to remove signature lines, and write the consent in a conversational format.

Submit Protocol Application

The completed protocol application and accompanying documents uploaded to WebKit, must be submitted by the PI (faculty member). Once the PI has submitted the protocol for review, the IRB will review and send out a Notice of Action usually within 7-10 days, unless committee review is required. If review by the Expedited Sub-Committee or the Full IRB is required (as determined by the IRB office), please refer to the deadlines and meeting dates page.
