Information for Schools Engaged in Research

Site Permission

For research activities taking place in schools, the IRB will require site permission letters from each school, district, etc. from the appropriate authority.  The permission may be provided from a principal, school district review committee/office, superintendent, etc. The IRB relies on the schools/districts and researchers to get permission from the appropriate authority.

The IRB looks for the following to be included in site permission letters:

- Protocol title and/or number
- Names of the research team members
- Scope of the research, and the activities to be conducted at the site
- Name of site
- Person providing permission (including title, contact information, and confirmation of appropriate authority to provide permission)

Information for Teachers Engaged in Research

Engagement

If teachers are engaged in research activities taking place in their school or classroom, they must complete human subjects training and be listed on the protocol application. The IRB defines engagement based on involvement in any research activities, including recruitment, consenting, data collection, data analysis, etc.
